A guide to halal dining in the GTA

By The HalalNearby Team

The Greater Toronto Area is one of the best places in the world to eat halal — if you know where to look. A neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood, cuisine-by-cuisine starting map for newcomers and lifers alike.

There are few cities on earth where you can eat halal as well, and as widely, as in the Greater Toronto Area. Afghan kabob in Scarborough, Lebanese shawarma in Mississauga, Hyderabadi biryani in Brampton, Hakka Chinese, Somali, Uyghur, Pakistani BBQ, and a dessert scene that runs well past midnight. This is a starting map — not the whole territory, but enough to get you eating well this week.

Mississauga: the shawarma heartland

If you want Middle Eastern done seriously, Mississauga is the move. The corridor along Hurontario and out toward the west end is dense with Lebanese and Syrian spots turning out shawarma, shish taouk, and garlic sauce that ruins you for the chain versions forever. It's also quietly one of the best biryani cities in the country.

Scarborough & East: grills and global

Scarborough is where the GTA's halal scene gets gloriously international. Afghan kabob houses, Pakistani karahi spots, Hakka Chinese, and platters built for sharing. Come hungry, come with people, and don't skip the bread.

Toronto proper: range over everything

Downtown and the inner suburbs give you range — Middle Eastern, halal burgers, Mediterranean, and a growing crop of halal-friendly cafes and dessert bars. It's the part of the region where "halal" and "trendy new opening" overlap most often.

How to use HalalNearby to plan

  • Check the halal status, not just the name. A spot can be Verified, Owner-Reported, Muslim-Friendly, or still Needs Verification. The badge tells you how much has actually been confirmed.
  • Browse by city or cuisine. Our city pages and cuisine pages are curated, not just dumped search results — start there.
  • Lean on the collections. Our editors hand-pick themed guides — late-night eats, dessert spots, shawarma worth the drive — when you want a shortlist instead of a search.

The GTA rewards the curious eater. Pick a neighbourhood, pick a cuisine, check the status, and go. We'll keep verifying; you keep eating.
